[How to] Root htc Desire with Cyanogenmod 7 based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread Firmware

The htc desire is a good smartphone in smartphone world. The htc desire has a 3.7" AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixel and 252 ppi pixel density. This is good enough for this screen size. As usual 16 M color depth is used in this smartphone. These display features provides all visual enjoyments to the user. The htc desire has a 1GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor and 576 MB RAM and a 512 MB ROM. The chipset used htc in this smartphone is Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon. The processor and RAM provide a good performance in the smartphone world. The phone has a Adreno220 graphic processor which is a good one. This graphic processor helps to play the games very smoothly. But large sized games could not play without interruption.

The htc desire has a good 5 megapixel camera capable of taking pictures at 2592 x 1944 pixeland has the auto focusing facility helps to take good pictures. The phone has a LED flash which helps to take pictures when lights are dim. The camera has the face detection feature. The camera is capable to shoot videos at 480 p and could be shoot at 1280 x 720 pixel with 30 fps after updating the software. That is the recorded video is HD. This is a good feature for this phone.But one disadvantage of this phone is that it has no secondary camera. So that the user can not take his or her self picture. The htc desire support GPRS, edge, 3G, wifi and so on. The GPRS and edge helps to live with the internet world. The device has Bluetooth v2.1 which is helpful to transfer data between Bluetooth connections.

The htc desire has a powerful battery. htc used 1400 mAh Li-lon battery provide a good battery backup for this device. The phone has no dedicated internal memory for the user. But htc provides a  external sd card slot which is expandable up to 32 GB. This is much enough for storing data, music, movies and so on. This device support mp3, wav sound formats and supports a 3.5mm jack headset. And the 720 p HD videos can play smoothly on this device. HTC sense user interface used in this device.

The htc introduced initially with Android 2.1 Eclair firmware and provide a official update to Android 2.2 FroYo firmware. There are a lots custom ROMs applicable to this device. One is Cyanogenmod. The htc desire could be updated to Cyanogenmod 7 which is based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware and later it can upgrade to the new Android 4.0 ICS or 4.1 JellyBean firmware. The phone is initially with Android 2.1 Eclair firmware. Here is the description to update the htc desire to the Gingerbread firmware. It is comes with a lots of new features than Eclair and FroYo firmwares. This firmware is stable and smooth to use. You can install Cyanogenmod 7 on your device by following the given instructions. Please note that do not skip any step.

  • Make sure that the phone is charged atleast 80%. It is required to complete the rooting process without any power interruption.

  • Install USB driver of htc on your PC to communicate your phone and your computer.

  • There is a chance to lose your personal data such as contacts, messages, call logs after flashing your device. So you could better to take a back up of your personal data.

  • You need to install HBOOT driver on your PC \.


  1. Download the Cyanogenmod 7 ROM based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware file from here.

  2. Download the Google Apps corresponding to this Cyanogenmod 7 ROM from here.

  3. Save the both Cyanogenmod 7 ROM file and Google Apps file on your device memory.

  4. Now please switch off your device.

  5. Now enter to recovery menu. To do so you need to press and hold volume down key and power button .

  6. Select the recovery option from the coming menu to start the process.

  7. Now you are in Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery menu. From there you need to select wipe data and factory reset and confirm your process by clicking yes.

  8. Now please select wipe cache partition and confirm the process by clicking yes.

  9. Now you need to install the new ROM. So select install zip from sd card  on recovery menu.

  10. And next select choose zip from sd card and select the file downloaded in step 1. Please note that do not extract the file.

  11. After completing this process, you need to install Google Apps corresponding to the Cyanogenmod 7 ROM file.

  12. That is repeat the step 9 for install the Google Apps.

  13. Now select the file which you downloaded in step 2.

  14. After completing this process, reboot your device.

  15. Once again switch off your device and enter to CWM recovery menu.

  16. Now repeat step 7 and step 8.

  17. Please Reboot your device to complete the whole process.

Congratulations!!!You are successfully rooted your htc desire with Cyanogenmod 7 custom ROM based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware. Now enjoy the new flavor of android.
